Insert Auto Shape In Microsoft Word

When we are writing a story we may have to insert some designs beside some characters or beside some words we may need to insert a shape which tells the readers about the word and meaning or it. In that moment we may need to create a shape into the word document. Microsoft Word document has many different shapes and they have increased in 2010 version.
Steps to Insert Auto Shape:

1) Click on Insert and Picture and Click on Auto Shapes

2) It will insert a toolbar that has shapes on it.

We follow this procedure for Microsoft word 2003 version. It differs a bit for 2007 and 2010 versions.

I am trying to insert a shape across two columns. I set the Layout to tight and the Order to In Front of Text. Nothing is working for me.
